Manual for ArtWords Producer

This is an app that you can make your own word puzzles with.

New Game

When you start the app for the first time you will directly enter "New Game". If not you can click the round plus-button at the top of the screen or use the menu. To simplify creation each option has a number and a color. When the background of the number is green it is a mandatory option. Other options are optional.

Every word puzzle is created in a package. A package is a collection of word puzzles where many different games join around something common or a theme. In case you have not created any package before you do it by providing a package name. Click the line with Package.

Click the round plus-button again or use New Package in the menu to create a new package. If you already have a package you can instead select it in the list below.

When creating a new package you provide a name. Choose a name common for the word puzzles you are going to create. I write "Animals" and the I click Back.

Next step is to provide a name for your new word puzzle. Click the "Name" option. A new window will be shown where you can enter a name for it. My game is about crocodiles so I write "Crocodiles" and press Back.

The quest is the mission for the player of your new word puzzle. You can select between four different quest types. Click the line with "Quest" and the different types are shown.

I choose the first option Find all words associated with "Crocodiles" and click Back.

It is now time to supply an artwork. Click the "Artwork" line and a new window will show the various options.

Click the house image to provide an artwork image from the Gallery. The image you select will be used as a background in your new word puzzle. I select an image of a huge crocodile jaw. When you have selected an image, it will be shown on the previous location of the house image.

Now you can provide a Name for your artwork. The name will be displayed when your future player wants to see information about your artwork. The name can also be used for searching internet so it is an opportunity for artists to make it possible to find the their website. I write "Crocodile Jaw".

Width (cm) and Height (cm) are other details about your artwork that the player might find interesting. Since my crocodile image is no physical artwork I enter 0.0 cm for both fields.

For Technique I select Photograpy since my crocodile is a photo. If your artwork is painted using Oil on Canvas you can enter it here.

Created (Year) is the year the artwork was finished. In this case I don't need to change since the present year is prefilled.

Artist is the name of the artist that created the artwork. I have snapped by own crocodile photo so I enter my own name in this field.

Confers to publish agreement is important in case you want to share your word puzzle online. Click the blue text to select your relation to the artwork creation. In the window that then shows you select the best matching option. Click Back to go to the artwork settings. The field Confers to publish agreement will be checked in the case it is possible to share your game with others.

Colunms and Rows

For these two options you provide the width and height for the letter template that will be used to cover the artwork. If you want to change any of the settings, click the setting and select your columnn or row size that will be used. Please note that the wider or higher template you configure, the more memory will be used by the player's device.

It is here possible to change the marking color used for words in the puzzle. In the window displayed, click a color or nuance either in the circle or in the middle triangle. The middle triangle changes color depending on where you clicked the circle. The square box displays the current marking color. Click Back when the color of your choice is displayed.

The template is used to configure the available letter positions in your word puzzle. When you click Template you will see a template showing how your new game will appear, less the letters. Instead of letters, a round area marks all positions where it is possible to place letters. Where no round area is shown, no letter will be placed when playing. To change the letter positions you longclick every position to change.

The following ways to modify the letter positions are available:

If you increase Column or Row size in "New Game", empty positions will be added to the existing template. If you decrease the number of columns or rows, any previous letter positions outside the new template size will be deleted. Click Back when you are finished with your new template.

In this setting you provide the words to be available in the puzzle. Make sure to spell correctly in order not to fool the player. You can provide both words and sentences here, but what you write must fit the template or else the word will be automatically excluded from the game.

Write a word to be placed in your game. Then press the Add-button and the word will be added in the list below.

Should you want to change a word, click it in the list. The word is then transfered to the field at the top and you can change it. When you are finished updating the word, click Apply and the word will be updated in the list.

To remove a word, longclick it and select Remove in the popup-menu.

When you have supplied all words needed for your game, press Back.

Here you configure lots of different game rules.

Check all that applies for your game. To make the game easier you can also select to reveal some or all word letters to the player.

Here you can preview the random placement of your words in the template and you can see the number of words that fits. If you want to change the placement you can press the Refresh-button in the actionbar or in the menu. When you are happy with the placement you need to Set Placement in the menu. If you forget that, the placement initially showed will be used.

Please note that the placement will automatically change if you change any previous setting. The placement choice must be made in the end of your game design.

Completed art

Here you can configure an artwork to be displayed for the user as a reward when all words have been found. Follow the steps under Artwork to configure it. If you don't wish to supply any completed artwork, the standard artwork will be used.

When you are finished click Back. The application will evaluate all settings made. When there are errors those will be written in red below the erroneous setting. It is just to enter the setting again and correct the error. To play your new word puzzle, click the package in the list. The package will expand and if you click the game it will be started. Should you want to edit the game again, just longclick the game and select Edit. When you are content with all games in a package and they Confer to the publish agreement, there will also be a Publish option found longclicking the package. Chances are that your package will be available for all ArtWords gamers over the world. Using the Refresh-button in the package list, the application will check if there are any packages from other game designers available for download.

Should you want, it is possible to translate your word puzzles to other languages. It can be done by changing language in the menu and then supply a translation for each text in the puzzle in the same fields that were previously used. Every window has its own language choice.
